Classics Illustrated Comics

Classics Illustrated ComicsComics additional credit

Last week, I was one of the first to see Ironman, the blockbuster was the first movie and the next hero in the Marvel comic books next to the silver screen. I love the movie so I went to see him again in the morning morning.

Although I liked the movie I must admit that Ironman was not a hero, I attended regularly when I was in the comics. I can not explain my nine to ten year old tastes like it has been almost 40 years, but I think I was more attracted to art and dialogue in DC Comics: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern , and the rest of the Justice League of America.

If I had ten today, and I saw the latest movies comics, I'd be appearing in Batman Ironman. Both have rich alter-ego with clear consciences and bones from their enemies, the two had weapons in the family business, we learned that Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins in 2005 and both have a loyal assistant confidential trustworthy. Again, Marvel and DC heroes created by accidents (Spiderman and Hulk vs Green Lantern and Flash) and the heroes who live underwater (Namor and Aquaman) and heroes who come from other worlds (Thor and Wonder Woman).

If I took my nephew 11 years to see Ironman, I have wished that he paid some attention to the basement workshop Tony Stark. I know that when I was 11, I would have drooled over the possibility of having my own sanctuary, with personal robots, computers, virtual reality, stereo and sports cars to play with. And who would have been one of the lessons I hope my nephew from the movie: that smart people can do great things if they apply. My nephew does not become a superhero, but he could work with robotics or virtual reality considered "job cool" youth of today or it could design my next car. I know some parents Ironman can dismiss as a violent film, but Tony Stark is cool science for children.

There are more advanced lessons we learn from the comic too. The original was written in 1963 Ironman, and it was a reaction to the growing involvement of America in Vietnam. While the movie shows Tony Stark in 2008 captured by Afghan guerrillas, comics 1963 taken prisoner by North Vietnamese after he saw that his weapons have fallen into their hands. Until then, Tony had thought of himself and his father as hero. Their weapons have been used to defend U.S. interests, and now they were used to arm dictators less responsible. There are many ethical, political and psychological lessons to learn from the Ironman. Artists and writers who pen the comics know this. Therefore, at four dollars a pop, you see car ads in the comics, they are to reach adults and children. This is also why the authors noted fiction such as Brad Meltzer and Jodi Picoult have moved into the medium, penning graphic novels of the League of Justice, and Wonder Woman.

If I taught language arts, social studies or science, I would use the comic book to illustrate points in textbooks or classical literature. Comic heroes face very similar conflicts and younger audiences have some familiarity with the characters. The best comic writers have, indeed, have based their work on the more "sophisticated" literature, they have made it easier to understand. Just the teacher's right to know that.

I know it will bring laughs, but do not underestimate the power of comics. Superman, in print and radio, was a symbol for America as we fought the Nazis during the Second World War and so was Captain America. Captain America Comics sold more than 1 million copies per month during the war, exceeding the national news magazines such as time.

And c'mon, admit it, you go to the comic book in your local newspaper before consulting the news.
