Comics Extra Credit - Part 3 I Ironman to blame for catching the virus emerged during recent weeks. This weekend I went to see another Marvel character, The Incredible Hulk, be re-presented to the public. This is the second Hulk movie in five years, the previous Hulk, directed by Ang Lee, best known for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with his martial art and Yo Yo Ma soundtrack, was a complete flop.
The Hulk 2008 has much more promising, because one thing he has a stronger cast. Ed Norton plays scientist Bruce Banner, the main character, who, like Hulkmaniacs knowledge is bombarded with gamma radiation that transforms him into a huge green monster when he gets angry. Liv Tyler, who I loved in Armageddon, plays Dr. Elizabeth Ross, Banner colleague scientific interest and love. William Hurt plays her father, a black-ops style general who wants to use banner hulkiness turn soldiers into more powerful fighting machines.
What makes this work is not the history of special effects, but the representation of Norton's Banner, which is grappling with science and inner demons to shake the monster out of him. It looks more like the banner played by Bill Bixby in the 1978 series: always on the run, always a little less than a cure, and always the hero. And the monster is a bit smarter in this movie, he knows how to quickly protect debris by tearing cars and tanks in half. I do not remember being as ingenious previous pontoons. By the way, you'll catch a glimpse of Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, green alter ego in the film that you will not want to miss.
The Hulk is not the only hero in the Marvel universe who would prefer not to be a hero-monster, the Fantastic Four have Ben Grimm, The Thing, an astronaut who has been bombarded by radiation and transformed into something abroad. But the Hulk is more famous because he came first and is not part of a team great. It is also the most interesting character because he is more complex. Ben takes advantage of its new physics, and pulls his big mouth when it is time to demolish. The Hulk just mumbles and runs away to find new clothes and a lab to cure himself and suppress his anger. The new movie supports this by flashing days without incident, the public has a chuckle when that number dropped to 0 and 1.
There are things to learn from the carcass, as there was the Ironman. On the one hand, it is clear that little knowledge can become dangerous in the wrong hands. On the other hand, you see a struggle within a man who could use its power of greed or ill taken power - he can not operate well enough to use it for good - but it does be himself. The Hulk is not the only hero who prefer the man, but he works hard to return to humanity that one of them.
Ironman is the best film, but The Incredible Hulk is worth your time if you're a fan of Marvel. You'll even get another hint that these characters will come together in suites. These characters are a franchise that has lasted 46 years, but the visits, beginning with the first Spiderman, have been coming for only six. These comics, the Beatles and the Stones were among the few cultural icons that my generation has passed on to the future. They may be fictional, but they are still icons.
