I know this is a stupid answer, and I'm probably wrong but it is probably time to make children laugh at some guy and he was laughing the whole north-east with everyone copied it ... it's my theory.

I think it was something Marx Brothers. I would say Groucho Marx, but it is probably because it is the only one I can think of. They made it famous, but I do not know how they arrived with him.

At least that's what I think.
